Juneteenth is a federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. This holiday is celebrated each year on June 19, the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people in Texas were officially free. Although President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier, many enslaved people in Texas had remained unaware of their freedom until Union troops enforced the order at the end of the Civil War.

Juneteenth has long been celebrated within African American communities through gatherings, parades, music, storytelling, prayer services, and educational events. Over time, the holiday grew from a regional observance in Texas to a nationwide celebration of history, resilience, culture, and achievement. It also serves as a time for reflection on the ongoing struggle for equality and civil rights in the United States.

Juneteenth became an officially recognized federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. This made it the first new federal holiday established in the United States since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created in 1983. Today, schools, businesses, government offices, and communities across the country observe Juneteenth with celebrations and educational programs that honor freedom and acknowledge the history and legacy of slavery in America. You can experience this holiday in the Cincy Region at a variety of local events, ranging from parades and block parties to tasting events at Findlay Market and ceremonies at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
